Let’s Talk Wedding Timings – Advice from The London DJ
Over the last few weekends, I’ve performed at several weddings in the same venue, and it’s really brought one thing to light again — timings matter, and the advice being given to couples by some venues is, quite frankly, wrong.
In three consecutive weddings, each couple had been given timing schedules that simply didn’t make sense. And now, once again, I’ve just finished a final details call for this weekend’s wedding — same venue, same problem.
Unrealistic Timings Are Causing Unnecessary Stress
One of the biggest issues I see is the wedding breakfast timing. For example, this venue had suggested a two-hour window for the entire wedding breakfast, including speeches. Anyone who’s been to a wedding knows that’s just not realistic — and it’s not fair on the couple.
A wedding breakfast with 70 guests takes time. People are eating, chatting, enjoying the moment, and celebrating. Speeches can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes, sometimes longer if emotions are high or if there are multiple speakers. So realistically, a proper wedding breakfast should allow at least two and a half to three hours, minimum.
When the timings are too tight, it creates a domino effect — everything that follows runs late: the turnaround for the evening, the cake cutting, the first dance, and of course, the DJ set. And the frustrating part is, this can all be avoided with just a bit of common sense and realistic planning.
Why This Keeps Happening
Far too often, couples are told to trust the venue’s schedule. And while some venues are fantastic and know their timings well, others create tight timelines simply to make the day look tidy on paper. It might look perfect on a printed schedule, but in reality, it’s impossible to achieve.
Weddings are about joy, laughter, and connection — not rushing. When timings are wrong from the start, couples spend their day feeling pressured, suppliers are forced to adapt on the fly, and what should be a relaxed, enjoyable occasion turns into a logistical scramble.
The Importance of Getting It Right
As a professional wedding DJ, I’ve been part of hundreds of weddings across London, Kent, and beyond. I’ve seen first-hand how much smoother the day runs when the timings are realistic. Guests are happier, the couple gets to actually enjoy their meal, and the evening reception flows naturally into an unforgettable party.
Here’s a simple truth: your wedding day doesn’t need to run perfectly to the minute — but it does need to be planned realistically.
My Advice to Couples
When you’re finalising your schedule with your venue or planner, don’t be afraid to question the timings. If something doesn’t seem achievable, speak up. Ask your suppliers — particularly your DJ, caterer, and photographer — for input. We work on the ground every weekend and can give you a genuine sense of what works and what doesn’t.
A good rule of thumb:
- Allow at least 2.5–3 hours for your wedding breakfast (including speeches).
- Build in a 15-minute buffer between transitions (e.g. moving from the meal to the cake cutting).
- Remember, things like serving drinks, topping up glasses, or taking photos all take longer than expected.
These small adjustments make a huge difference to how relaxed your day feels.
Final Thoughts
Weddings are full of beautiful moments that deserve to be enjoyed — not rushed through because of an unrealistic schedule. So, if you’re currently planning your day, take a few minutes to double-check your timings. Speak to your suppliers, trust your instincts, and make sure your plan allows time to breathe.
And if you ever need advice from someone who’s seen it all — from the planning stages to the final song of the night — I’m always happy to help.
