Weddings, Heatwaves & Timing: Don’t Rush the Magic
With the summer sun blazing and the UK in the grip of a heatwave, wedding season is well and truly underway. And while the sunshine can make for stunning photos and a lovely outdoor drinks reception, it also comes with a few challenges — especially when it comes to timings.
We’re seeing more and more couples being advised to move everything earlier “because it’s hot” — including the first dance — and that can honestly kill the evening atmosphere before it even gets going.
Here’s why timing still matters — even in 30+ degree heat.
Let Evening Guests Arrive First
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve turned up to weddings where venues or toastmasters have told couples to do the first dance at 6:30pm. In July. When the sun’s blazing, the bar is packed, and only a handful of your evening guests have even arrived.
The result? A nearly empty dancefloor, background music until 9pm, and that slightly flat feeling where everything’s happened too soon.
Your guests need time to settle in, catch up, have a drink, and feel part of the evening before the big moments begin.
Don’t Let the Heat Make You Rush
Yes, it’s hot. Yes, people might want to step outside and cool off. But that’s totally fine — it’s part of the rhythm of a summer wedding. The key is not to rush things just because it’s warm.
Your first dance should still feel special, not squashed in early for the sake of it. Waiting until the early evening — when more guests have arrived and the temperature’s dropped — makes for a much better vibe and a far fuller dancefloor.
Trust Experience, Not Just Advice
It’s your day — and while it’s great to get tips from photographers, venues and entertainers, always make sure the advice suits your style, your crowd and the time of year.
At The London DJ, we’ve done over 2,000 weddings across London and the South East. We know how to read the room, how to get the best out of a summer evening, and how to keep the party going well into the night — even after a scorching day.
Final Word
A great wedding isn’t about rushing through a checklist — it’s about creating moments that actually land.
Take your time. Let the evening breathe. Wait for your guests to arrive. Then hit the dancefloor when it feels right — not just when the schedule says so.
