Why Wedding Timings Matter – A Cautionary Tale from a Recent Bride

At The London DJ, we’ve been part of thousands of weddings over the years — and if there’s one piece of advice we give couples time and time again, it’s this: timings can make or break your wedding day.

Just this week, we spoke with a bride whose venue had advised her on a schedule that would have led to chaos during the evening reception. And sadly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen poor advice lead to unnecessary stress and avoidable disruption.

Timing Is Everything – Especially in the Evening

Here’s what happened: the couple had booked a fantastic live band. The venue told the bride to schedule their first set at 8:00 PM, and their second set at 9:15 PM. Sounds okay on paper, right?

Wrong.

What the venue failed to consider is that the evening buffet — which the couple had invested heavily in — was also scheduled for 9:00 PM, with over 80 guests to feed.

That means the band would return for their second set to an empty dance floor as guests lined up for food. The energy drops, the atmosphere suffers, and the moment is lost. A total mismatch in planning — and completely avoidable.

There are other factors too — like the season and sunset times. For example, scheduling the first dance too early in the summer might mean guests are still enjoying the sun outside, missing that magical moment entirely. Or in winter, not factoring in how early it gets dark could impact everything from photos to guest comfort.

In this case, we’re providing DJ services alongside the band. Thankfully, we were on hand to step in and reorganise the evening schedule — making sure the live sets don’t clash with food service, and building a seamless flow of entertainment that keeps guests engaged all night.

We’ve adjusted our own DJ set times to support the band and ensure the dance floor stays packed once everyone’s eaten and the party really gets going. That’s the kind of flexibility and teamwork that makes all the difference.

We’ve begged this particular venue — who actually booked us on behalf of the couple — to provide final details, but they’ve refused to share basic info. It’s frustrating, especially when couples are spending upwards of £30,000 on their wedding day and deserve a higher standard of service.
